06/26/17 - Day 84 - Boston, MA - JFK Museum & Fort Independence

Took a trip to South Boston to visit the JFK Presidential Library & Museum. Completed in 1979, it's the official repository for original papers and correspondence of the Kennedy Administration.  The exhibitions cover the campaign, election, inauguration, administration, assassination, and ongoing legacy of JFK. It's not a terribly large museum but I thought it was well done.  I particularly liked the effort to recreate scenes from the time period that included original or recreated material.  For example, some of the video footage from that period was displayed on the TV sets available at the time. A friend of mine from college now lives in New Hampshire.  I got in touch with him and took a short drive up to visit him for the weekend.  We visited a couple of sites in both New Hampshire and southern Maine. Fort McClary - Kittery, ME      Mount Agamenticus - York, ME      Nubble Lighthouse - York, ME Closing out Sunday was an out of this world seafood dinner featuring a lobster boil and mussels.  One of the best meals I've had on this trip.

You can get there by air or by sea, no land bridges.  Among the ferries, there are traditional and high speed variants, with the traditional trip taking a little over 2hrs and the high speed about 1hr.  I took the high speed ferry from Hyannis to Nantucket. The ferry drops everyone off at the main docks that opens up into downtown Nantucket.  You're immediately surrounded by restaurants, pubs, pizza shops, ice cream shops, t shirt shops, etc.  It's a short walk beyond the tourist trap area to some of the attractions.  One of the most highly recommended is the Whaling Museum.      Housed in what was once an 19th century candle factory, the museum follows the rise and fall of the whaling industry in Nantucket.  Between the end of the American Revolution and the start of the Civil War, whaling was a huge international enterprise...
