05/23/17 - Day 50 - Brooklyn - Bike trip to Prospect Park & Botantical Gardens

Took the bike out for another long trip, this time to Brooklyn to revisit Prospect Park and tour the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.

Since locking the replacement bike inside my car every night I've not had any additional theft issues.  Apparently breaking out auto glass is a step too far for the neighborhood thieves guild.

I started out headed east on Queens Blvd, a road I've been running on in the mornings.  It's got a dedicated bike line which is nice and you can see the Empire State building in the distance.

Eventually I took a southeast turn onto Greenpoint Ave which crosses Queens into Brooklyn as it approaches the East River.  Upon reaching the river I followed Franklin St and Kent Ave along the river, passing the Willliamsburg Bridge on the way.

It took little over an hour to make it to the park.

The park was created in 1867 and encompasses 585 acres of territory.  By comparison, Central Park is 778 acres.  Both parks feature bike paths, jogging trails, ball fields, open meadows, picnic areas, and relatively little automobile traffic.  I took a loop around the perimeter path and had lunch near the lake watching the wildlife pass by.

I went looking for a volleyball court I saw listed on the map, but the results were disappointing.  I did however see my first superhero of the trip.

The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens is right next door to the park and just behind the Brooklyn Museum.  Unlike the New York version in the Bronx, this one was free to visit.

The Cranford Rose Garden.  Only a few were really in bloom but in the next couple weeks it should be pretty spectacular.

The Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden

The Shakespeare Garden

Steinhardt Conservatory

The conservatory has three climate controlled exhibits (Temperate, Tropical, and Desert) as well as a Bonsai plant exhibit.

The Bonsai exhibit was really cool.  Before seeing it I honestly though Bonsai was a type of tree, not a style of pruning that could applied to many types of trees.

Saw an interesting tree on the way out

After spending several hour in Brooklyn I headed back to Queens via the long way through lower Manhattan. It was a good excuse to ride over the Brooklyn and Williamsburg bridges.

On the way I passed a couple of interesting scenes - an old school taxi waiting for a fare and evidence that someone's apology didn't go over quite as well as they hoped.

Got home safe and sound.  Later that night I caught this PSA at the subway station.
