05/17/17 - Day 44 - Manhattan - Liberty Island & Battery Park

Finally got around to taking a trip to visit the Statue of Liberty.  Turns out if you want to do anything except ride the ferry to and from the island you need to register well in advance.  To enter the pedestal, I had to get tickets a week early.  To go all the way up to the crown, you need to reserve months in advance.

It was the first hot day we had in the city since I arrived.  I was disappointed to learn that there was a airport-like screening process to get to ferries.  I and about 300 other people had to stand in the 12 o'clock sun for about 45min.  The boat ride was a refreshing change after that.

It was a fairly clear day so we could Manhattan and Jersey City pretty clearly from the island

Apparently the ubiquitous Canadian geese have made a home here as well.

Inside the pedestal is a museum dedicated to the creation of the statue and it's impact to the country and the world.  The lobby displays the original torch that was replaced in the 1980s.

They explain the reason why the statue was created, how it was designed and fabricated, what it represented at the time, and what it represents today.  They also have some scale copper models of the statue for you to see and touch.

From the pedestal, Ellis Island

Realized after walking around the status I didn't realize she has her right leg swept back as though in mid-stride.

On the way back to Battery Park

Battery Park, named for the artillery placements the Dutch put into place to protect what was then New Amsterdam. It was later an immigration processing center until Ellis Island opened in 1892.  Now it houses several war memorials in addition to being a public park.
