05/25/17 - Day 52 - NYC - Broadway Show

Quick update - attended my first Broadway show: Groundhog Day the Musical

I'd hesitated seeing any Broadway shows on any of my previous visits to NYC for a couple reasons.  1) The tickets can be quite expense and 2) I don't like musicals.  However, the Bill Murray movie of the same name is one of my favorites of all time so I thought if nothing else I'll enjoy the story.  In short, I was very surprised how much I enjoyed this show.  The story followed the movie pretty closely with only a few changes made to accommodate the change from film to live theatre.  They included nearly all the classic quotes and scenes along with the musical numbers.  What impressed me most was the constant state of flux in which the background scenery resided.  All set transitioned occurred in during the musical numbers and were incorporated into the song choreography.  The transitions were augmented by the fact that the stage included two rotating concentric circles that allowed the actors and set folks to smoothly transition stage elements from one scene to the next.  The level of logistical precision necessary to accomplish all the movements without people crashing into each other was incredibly impressive.   The show ran about two and half hours which felt like the perfect amount of time.

If all of the Broadway shows exhibit this level of production value and are as entertaining, I will have to reconsider my stance on them going forward.

  1. I've always wanted to attend a Broadway show, and this post has assured me it is worth the price.
