Day 59 - New York City, NY to Boston, MA - 233 miles

 Said goodbye to my friends in New York and drove northeast to Boston, MA.  It took almost an hour to get north of the NYC before I really started to make any progress.  The drive took a little over five hours including a stop for lunch just outside of Hartford, CT.  The drive itself wasn't too bad, although I noticed clouds of white fluffy tree flowers or seeds or something to that effect.  It looked as though someone was shaking gigantic feather pillow over the highway for most of the trip.

The house I'm staying at this month is located in Cambridge, about half a mile north of the Harvard campus.  The house was built in 1902, is enormous, and split into six different condo units, each with 3-4 bedrooms.  Our unit has four bedrooms, a shared kitchen and living space, and small garden.
    

    

It's located in a nice quiet neighborhood with similar homes; quiet a change from my Queens neighborhood.
    

No dishwasher, but I am happy to have an onsite laundry room again.

05/23/17 - Day 50 - Brooklyn - Bike trip to Prospect Park & Botantical Gardens

Took the bike out for another long trip, this time to Brooklyn to revisit Prospect Park and tour the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. Since locking the replacement bike inside my car every night I've not had any additional theft issues.  Apparently breaking out auto glass is a step too far for the neighborhood thieves guild.      I started out headed east on Queens Blvd, a road I've been running on in the mornings.  It's got a dedicated bike line which is nice and you can see the Empire State building in the distance. Eventually I took a southeast turn onto Greenpoint Ave which crosses Queens into Brooklyn as it approaches the East River.  Upon reaching the river I followed Franklin St and Kent Ave along the river, passing the Willliamsburg Bridge on the way.      It took little over an hour to make it to the park.      The park was created in 1867 and encompasses 585 acres of territory.  B...

08/22/17 - Day 141 - Vail, CO

One of the activities I'd been looking forward to during my Denver visit was the opportunity to see what a ski resort looked like without snow.  Vail is one of my favorite resorts and only a couple hours away from Denver.  I headed out of Denver early to get breakfast at a great cafe in Silverthorn (Mountain Lyon Cafe - their green chili is so good) and made it into Vail around mid-morning.      Vail looks a lot different in the summer.  First of all, it's free to park at the resort parking garages vs. the $40 a day charged during ski season.  The place isn't blanketed with snow and there are flowers all over.            But I was surprised how quiet it was.  There aren't a lot of tourists and several of the businesses are having specials in order to attract the ones who were there.  Unfortunately for them I wasn't really in the market for what they were selling.    ...

04/22/17 - Day 19 - Chattanooga, TN - Lookout Mountain & Tennessee Aquarium

After a very quiet Friday night in Chattanooga (compared to Nashville at least), I let Trip Advisor recommend a couple of sites to see; Lookout Mountain and the downtown aquarium. Point Park on Lookout Mountain Lookout mountain played a key role in the civil war.  A park ranger explained how the Confederacy had surrounded a Union army in the city of Chattanooga.  They occupied the top of lookout point and hauled a battery of cannons up there in order to blockade the river. The Union eventually established a beachhead out of range of the guns, reinforced and resupplied their army, and pushed the Confederacy off the mountain.  This action opened up the south for Sherman's invasion and the eventual end of the war.
