06/04/17 - Day 62 - Boston, MA - Harvard Visit

The Harvard campus is about half a mile south of where I'm staying for the month.  I took a walk to check it out.  Established in 1636, it's the oldest institution of higher learning in the U.S.  The campus is a few miles west of downtown Boston and is split between the north and south banks of the Charles River. I walked from the north to the south end, crossing the Harvard Square commercial area and the river.  Passed the Sanders Theatre and the Widener Library.

The pedestrian bridge over the river allows for some distant views of downtown

The athletic campus is on the south side of the river.  I wanted to take a look at their football stadium, and luckily the gates were open.

The stadium was constructed in 1903 and today seats around less than 31,000.  All the permanent bleachers are stone, and they don't look terribly comfortable.  There's a ring of temporary wooden bleachers underneath the overhang as well.

Overall the campus is nice, but apart from a couple landmark buildings it's not that much different from UF's.  Most of the buildings looks relatively new or redesigned.  Vanderbilt had a more classic look to their campus.  I did see a couple odd animal related sights on the way.  The turkey below was just sitting next to a tree near a very busy Harvard Square intersection.  The rabbit I saw crossing the road like a cat or dog and casually wandering in and out of people's yards.  I guess the animals up here are a little more blasé about people than the ones back home.

Also, the graffiti in this part of town has a different slant than I'm used to seeing.
