06/10/17 - Day 68 - Boston, MA - Arnold Arboretum
Another nice day merited a trip to the Arnold Arboretum located south of Brookline in Jamaica Plain, about 7.5 south of where I'm staying. I took the car for a change to go check it out.

The arboretum was founded in 1872 and is operated by Harvard University. The city owns the land as of 1882, but they've granted Harvard a 1000 year lease for, according to the tour guide, the princely sum of $1 per annum. It's named after James Arnold, a whaling merchant who originally had an estate at the same location. The pic below is a scale model of the grounds that resides in the visitor's center.

The arboretum is broken up into specific zones, with trees like maples and oaks in one zone, conifers in another, etc. The layout includes a couple of hills that offer some nice views, including downtown.

Several tress, shrubs and smaller plants were in bloom at the time of my visit, including a few azaleas.

Similar to the Brooklyn arboretum, this one also had a Bonsai exhibit.

My favorite tree of the visit was probably this one, a weeping hemlock.

Definitely a good place to visit, and free to boot.
