06/14/17 - Day 72 - Boston, MA - Sam Adams Brewery

Quick Update - Visited the Sam Adams Brewery on the south side of town in Jamaica Plains.


The local brewery specializes in the small batch specialty beers.  The mass market production breweries are in Cincinnati, OH and Lehigh Valley, PA.  The Boston brewery has free daily tours, but there's a $10 early morning tour with an extending tasting that I decided to attend.


The tour was typical of all the other breweries I've visited.  I think I've seen about a dozen so far and they're all starting to run together.  The tasting room is nice though and the guide was entertaining.

05/23/17 - Day 50 - Brooklyn - Bike trip to Prospect Park & Botantical Gardens

Took the bike out for another long trip, this time to Brooklyn to revisit Prospect Park and tour the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. Since locking the replacement bike inside my car every night I've not had any additional theft issues.  Apparently breaking out auto glass is a step too far for the neighborhood thieves guild.      I started out headed east on Queens Blvd, a road I've been running on in the mornings.  It's got a dedicated bike line which is nice and you can see the Empire State building in the distance. Eventually I took a southeast turn onto Greenpoint Ave which crosses Queens into Brooklyn as it approaches the East River.  Upon reaching the river I followed Franklin St and Kent Ave along the river, passing the Willliamsburg Bridge on the way.      It took little over an hour to make it to the park.      The park was created in 1867 and encompasses 585 acres of territory.  B...

08/22/17 - Day 141 - Vail, CO

One of the activities I'd been looking forward to during my Denver visit was the opportunity to see what a ski resort looked like without snow.  Vail is one of my favorite resorts and only a couple hours away from Denver.  I headed out of Denver early to get breakfast at a great cafe in Silverthorn (Mountain Lyon Cafe - their green chili is so good) and made it into Vail around mid-morning.      Vail looks a lot different in the summer.  First of all, it's free to park at the resort parking garages vs. the $40 a day charged during ski season.  The place isn't blanketed with snow and there are flowers all over.            But I was surprised how quiet it was.  There aren't a lot of tourists and several of the businesses are having specials in order to attract the ones who were there.  Unfortunately for them I wasn't really in the market for what they were selling.    ...

06/23/17 - Day 81 - Nantucket, MA

Spent Friday taking a day trip out to see Nantucket, one of a couple large islands off the coast of Cap Cod. You can get there by air or by sea, no land bridges.  Among the ferries, there are traditional and high speed variants, with the traditional trip taking a little over 2hrs and the high speed about 1hr.  I took the high speed ferry from Hyannis to Nantucket. The ferry drops everyone off at the main docks that opens up into downtown Nantucket.  You're immediately surrounded by restaurants, pubs, pizza shops, ice cream shops, t shirt shops, etc.  It's a short walk beyond the tourist trap area to some of the attractions.  One of the most highly recommended is the Whaling Museum.      Housed in what was once an 19th century candle factory, the museum follows the rise and fall of the whaling industry in Nantucket.  Between the end of the American Revolution and the start of the Civil War, whaling was a huge international enterprise...
