06/27/17 - Day 85 - Boston, MA - Whale Watching
Quick update - last day in Boston so I booked a whale watching trip out of Boston harbor.

Ended up with a warm, clear day with good visibility. It was about a 45min trip out to where the whales were known to hang out. The crew of mostly young future ocean biology hopefuls kept watch on the top deck and tried to entertain the gaggle of children on the ship. As soon as we got to the area we started seeing the animals in action.

It's pretty hard to get a good photo of a whale since 80% of the animal is underwater the whole time, with one exception. Sometimes they leap completely out of the water. I did see a humpback whale do this about three times. I may have been the only one who saw it though, because I was the only one on the boat not part of the crew with binoculars, and the whale was at least 1500 yards away when it was happening. By the time we caught up with it, it was no longer in the mood for jumping.
We passed a few other animals, including a couple seals.

It was an interesting trip. I was amused to witness the spectacle of not only the whales, but the 3 or 4 competing sightseeing boats chasing them around at the same time. I also enjoyed the wild excitement from the young kids every time they saw so much as a flipper from a nearby whale. I can't imagine the reaction if they'd been able to see the leaping whale.
