06/29/17 - Day 87 - Niagara Falls, ON to Holland, MI

Day 87 - Niagara Falls, ON to Holland, MI - 395 miles
3154 cumulative miles

After spending the morning on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls I headed west towards Michigan to meet my friends for the weekend.  It was coming up on Canada Day and the 150th anniversary of them becoming a country.  The local public radio stations were celebrating all things Canada, including bagged milk, which I'd never heard of and can't quite figure out how it works.  I guess they decant it into a pitcher at the house?  Weird.  I listened for quite a while because I love the way they pronounce "about."  Also, I passed by a heck of a lot of windmills on the way through Ontario.

My friend's family spends a couple weeks camping each summer at the Holland State Park on the shore of Lake Macatawa which connect to Lake Michigan.  They have an upscale version of camping with multiple trailers with full kitchens and bedrooms.

My accommodations were a little more primitive.  But I did have power and an air mattress so it was fine.

For the next few days we spent some time in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo visiting some great restaurants and breweries

We visited the beach to play volleyball and watch the late sunset.

We tried for a day out on the lake boating

But we got caught in the rain, so we went back to a brew house instead.  One with some interesting beer names.

I was pleasantly surprised how nice Michigan was.  All the towns were visited were small but had really nice places to grab a bite and a drink.  It was a nice break from city life in between Boston and Chicago and it was great to see my Jacksonville friends again.
