08/06/17 - Day 125 - Denver, CO - Mt Galbraith Park
I met up with friend who recently moved from Florida to Denver to check out Mt Galbraith. Mt Galbraith is in a park just outside of Golden, CO which is about 15mi west of downtown Denver. There are about 5 miles of steep trails that lead to overlooks of the town and surrounding plains. We set out on the trail around mid-afternoon.

The weather was again overcast with thunderstorms threatening in the distance. We passed a few groups headed down the trail who were concerned about the possibility of getting caught in the storm. My friend and I plotted the storm's track on our phones and reckoned we weren't going to get hit with anything serious.
The trail was rocky with a lot of loose soil and more than a couple of rocky scrambles but not too bad. We got a little rain on the way up but not much. The views improved as our altitude increased.

However, as we neared the peak, the rain changed to pea sized hail and we sought cover underneath a relatively scrawny juniper tree. It didn't last long and was more of a curiosity than a problem. At the top of the peak was a more sinister sight.

All over the top of the mountain were charred trees, evidence that lightning strikes were a very common occurrence in these parts. It wasn't just one or two trees, there were dozens and dozens. With the storm brushing along side us we hurried through this section to the backside of the trail. Eventually we found our way back to the trail head and were treated to clearing skies and sunshine.

Afterwards we visited a very touristy part of Golden for a drink. A good afternoon overall.
