Day 116 - Chicago, IL to Lincoln, NE - 530 miles
3834 cumulative miles

I had a 1000+ mile journey between Chicago and Denver so I picked a halfway point in Nebraska to spend the night.  The trip through Illinois and Iowa was dull to say the least.  Nothing but mile after mile of corn and soybean farms.  I saw at least five different crop duster planes in operation which was something new.  They were flying so low and wild that I thought they were model planes at first.  It looked dangerous but I guess they know what they're doing.

The hotel I found was pretty cheap so I elected to stay an extra day to sight see.  Lincoln is small but an cool college town.  The University of Nebraska is there and you can see their monumental football stadium from the interstate and all around town.

I spent the morning driving to a small winery located north of town in the middle of corn field territory.  The place was called James Arthur Vineyards.  It was a nice looking place.

Their wine flights were very cheap, only $6 for five samples.  Unfortunately, I didn't care for any of them.  They were mainly focused on very sweet, fruity wines which are not my favorite.

I spent the early afternoon exploring downtown Lincoln and a couple of their points of interest.  I used my bike to get around which was super easy because the place is tiny.  I crossed from one side of town to other in less than half an hour.  Along the way I stopped by the state capitol as well as the Sunken Gardens.

Riding round town I came across a few curiosities.  Seems some folks are so obsessed with corn they use it for landscaping their homes.

There are a few shops downtown adding some humor to their street signage

Further, I came across this store where the message on the doormat seemed at odds with the look on the face of the one behind the door.

The day I visited happened to coincide with their annual fan appreciation day so I decided to check it out.  The school opened up the stadium to the public and allowed fans to come and get autographs from both the coaching staff and the entire team. Lots of Cornhusker fans came out to participate.  I took the opportunity to walk onto the field and take a look around.  Nebraska football has a long history so it was really neat to be able to see the place in person.

After the autograph session wrapped up they invited folks to stay and watch a movie on their new scoreboard - the Lego Batman movie.  I sat through the first few minutes before taking off the check out the rest of campus.

In the evening I had dinner in the Haymarket entertainment district, several blocks of lively restaurants and bars near the college campus.

I was pleasantly surprised by how cool Lincoln was.  I doubt I'll ever have a reason to visit it again but if I do I'll be looking forward to it.
